The Office / Work Space

The Office / Work Space is the first publication in a series featuring student work from the chair of Emanuel Christ & Christoph Gantenbein at ETH Zürich. The project investigates the changing nature of the workplace through a reading of existing spaces across Switzerland. Each student selected three former office spaces, which they documented, indexed, and catalogued. In a second step, one of these places was selected and reimagined, using the existing architecture as a starting point to speculate on what the office or workplace of the future could become.

Storage / Space of Accumulation

The second publication follows the same methodology, shifting the focus from the workplace to storages and “spaces of accumulation”. The students examined places across Switzerland that have historically been designed for storing, collecting, or accumulating – including dams, factory halls, postal facilities, and other forms of storage infrastructure. After documenting and cataloguing three examples, each student selected one site and reimagined it as a possible space of accumulation for the future.

Both publications translate this investigative approach into a generous, image-led work book format. The projects are given space to unfold visually, allowing photographs, drawings, and other forms of documentation to take the lead. Texts are kept concise and function more like subtitles in a film: they provide orientation without attempting to explain everything. Rather than presenting the projects as finished arguments, the books invite the reader to spend time with the students’ observations and proposals, leaving room for interpretation and dialogue.
